ACCIONA Construcción has successfully completed – three months ahead of schedule – the logistical tunnels for the Follo Line railway project, using the drilling and blasting method.
These tunnels, which will provide access for employees and material during the construction phase of the main rail tunnels, have been drilled at a depth of 100 meters in Åsland, near the Norwegian capital Oslo.
The work will continue with the digging of a 2.7-kilometer-long rescue tunnel and the preparation of a new system of tunnels for the underground assembly of four tunneling machines. It is expected that these machines will start work in the fourth trimester of 2016.
ACCIONA heads the joint venture for the Follo Line project under an EPC contract that includes the design and construction of twin tunnels dug by four 10-meter-diameter tunneling machines (double-shield system). The design of these tunnels, with an interior diameter of 8.75 meters and a length of 18 kilometers each, will allow high-speed train traffic up to 250 kilometers per hour.
This infrastructure is being developed by the Norwegian Public Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket). When the building work is completed in 2021, it will be the longest rail tunnel in Scandinavia. The Follo Line project, the biggest transport infrastructure project in Norway, will link the cities of Oslo and Ski to complete the central urban development axis to the south of the Norwegian capital.
