At an internal specialist conference on Friday, June 30, 2017, Renzo Simoni officially handed over chairmanship of the Executive Board of AlpTransit Gotthard Limited to his successor, Dieter Schwank. Renzo Simoni took his leave with a brief retrospective review. In his outlook, the new Chief Executive Officer, Dieter Schwank, focused on completion of the flat route through the Alps. The Ceneri Base Tunnel is planned to be handed over to Swiss Federal Railways on September 1, 2020.
In his review, Renzo Simoni again recalled what were for him the most important milestones of the project: installation of the deformable steel rings in the Tavetsch Intermediate Massif, the release of the jammed tunnel boring machine, and the trouble-free traverse of the feared Piora Syncline. But the most impressive moments were the final breakthrough on October 15, 2010, and the official opening ceremony on June 1, 2016. He was greatly saddened by the fatal accidents.
On behalf of the Board of Directors and employees of AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Werner Marti, thanked Renzo Simoni for his great and valuable contribution: “Under his leadership we experienced a highly successful period in the history of the construction project of the century. In particular, the construction costs stabilised and the timetable until the opening ceremony could be maintained”.
In his outlook, Dieter Schwank, who takes up his position as Chief Executive Officer on July 1, 2017, focused on completion of the flat route through the Alps: “On September 1, 2020, in almost exactly 38 months to the day, we want to hand over the Ceneri Base Tunnel to Swiss Federal Railways. Handing over such a tunnel is a fascinating and exciting undertaking – an interplay between all the areas of responsibility. Together with the Board of Directors, my colleagues on the Executive Board, and the employees, I look forward to tackling this challenge”.
