“Small, but simply WOW!” Hose connections in hydraulic systems

"Small, but simply WOW!" Hose connections in hydraulic systems

Hose nipples are invisible in a hydraulic system and at first glance, are not very important. At the same time, they are components which decisively contribute to making a system safe, available, and environmentally compatible.

Hose lines are always preferred over pipelines when flexibility is an issue; when, for example movements develop in a system which rigid pipes would not withstand. Hose lines are also well suited for detachment when two connected parts vibrate at different intensities or one is standing still. Rigid pipelines would transfer the vibrations and break in the worst case scenario. Hose nipples which connect the components of a hydraulic system play an important role. They should be selected with appropriate care. Depending on the field of usage, they must withstand unfavorable environmental conditions. They must be leak-tight, even when confronted with (salt)water and corrosive fluids or gases, vibrations, impacts, and intermittent pressure loads and impulses. The following aspects must be particularly considered when selecting hose nipples: Material, production, manufacturer’s product line, delivery times, quality checks, and traceability.

No compromises: Stainless-steel 1.4571 (316TI)

There are just a handful of manufacturers who serve the market segment of pipe fittings and connections. Of these in turn, the majority concentrate on the production of steel, but predominantly purchase stainless-steel products. Along with its steel program at the Deilingen headquarters, the Volz Group also produces its own stainless-steel products on state-of-the-art CNC-controlled machines. “In contrast to many competitors, we use exclusively high-grade stainless steel 1.4571 (316TI) for this. We don’t make any compromises there,” says Ralph Wolter, Director of Marketing and Business Development at Volz. Rod material and forged blanks come exclusively from European countries. “We supply to industries in which leak tightness must be guaranteed even under extreme conditions,” says Wolter. Stainless-steel 1.4571 is extremely corrosion-resistant and not just against water and saltwater, but also against other aggressive or corrosive media such as acids.

Stainless steel 1.4571 is also suitable for high temperatures and more resistant to intercrystalline corrosion than materials of lower quality. Moreover, acceptance test certificate 3.1. indicates that exact batch tracking of the raw material up to the melt is possible.

Production from a single cast

In common speech, something is “from a single cast” when the quality is right and a product or process is perfect. A “patchwork” in contrast has many weak points. This principle also applies for connection elements in hydraulic systems. With the Volz Group hose nipples, the formulation “from a single cast” can be taken literally: They are generally produced as a whole part and not soldered together from separate elements. This prevents the typical defects and weak points of multi-part nipples such as cavities and inclusions in the solder seam. The 90° arc must be produced without the nipple and without weakening the wall thickness to prevent reduction in the cross-section and the corresponding flow-rates. Volz has the necessary expertise for this and uses its own bending machine. The high level of vertical manufacturing and the production of the stainless-steel program in the Volz Group in Germany contribute significantly to quality and prompt availability.

Both know the value of hydraulic-system manufacturers. The Volz Group has entered into increasingly more fields of applications with its stainless-steel program in recent years. Ralph Wolter: “In order to meet the high demand, we have invested greatly in our machine fleet and expanded our capacities in stainless-steel production considerably.

When machines need to be converted from one material to another, this causes long and thus costly machine downtimes. Volz is one of the few companies which has not only invested in equipment for steel, but also in special machines for stainless-steel production and can thus operate quickly and cost-efficiently.

Together with its steel production, Volz offers the most comprehensive program among pipe-connection specialists for connections in both materials. Customers obtain all of the pipe-connection components from a single source and due to the high level of vertical integration, individual customer requirements can also be met on short notice.

Stainless-steel nipples for every application

In recent years, the Volz Group has greatly increased its program, its fields of application, and the customer base of the stainless-steel hose nipples, and has consequentially developed a comprehensive range of stainless-steel screw connections which meets nearly all requirements for hoses and their integration in the hydraulic system: both for fabric, woven, and multi-spiral hoses, and for thermoplastics and PTFE hoses in many variations. Volz has obtained certification in accordance with the DNV requirements, especially for shipbuilding and offshore applications, for its stainless-steel hose nipples in connection with spiral and woven hoses to meet extreme requirements, such as those of Gates, Manoli, EatonSEL or Semperit.

The diversity is even greater on the connection side. The user can choose between a straight and bent version for any of the numerous variations.

Two nipple variations are available for the diverse connection options. The selected press fitting allows them to be configured to the customer requirements. They are available with and without interlocking. The internal contour of the press fittings is matched to the specific hoses, or more precisely, to their interlocking. Volz also has extensive expertise in this area which are beneficial to the customer. This is because the combination options of the building-block system allow Volz to quickly supply the desired hose connection to the customer without needing to stock thousands of variations. Its own production in Germany guarantees consistently high product quality. The stocking of parts by international sales partners in their own warehouses also ensures short delivery times in other countries. International customers thus receive special products quickly and reliably and in high quality.

Support during assembly and press-fitting

An important topic is also customer support in all issues of further processing and assembly. Assembly instructions are available for all Volz products. The company offers training not only at the company headquarters in Deilingen, but also on its customer’s premises. “We see ourselves as our customers’ partner.”
