Construction of Fehmarnbelt tunnel

, is set to start work on an 18km-long undersea tunnel to Germany that will aim to be the world’s largest road and rail tunnel.

The Fehmarbelt Tunnel will be constructed through state-owned company Femern A/S. It be a direct and fast route between Europe and <spancalibri”,sans-serif;>Scandinavia, taking seven minutes by train and 10 minutes by road.

This will decrease travel times between Copenhagen and Hamburg from four and a half hours to two and a half hours. As well as lowering fuel costs and CO2 emissions.

It will cost an estimated €7.4bn and the project will be self-funding through traffic tolls.

Tunnel elements will be fitted with watertight bulkheads and transferred to dry docks where they will then be moved along rails into position.

Nine individual segments will make up one tunnel element, the entire tunnel will consist of 89 elements each weighing over 70,000 tonnes.
